I can build my business at my own pace - I can build it as large or as small as I want to."
Tracey Hudson - South Warwickshire, Rugby & North Derbyshire With The HR Dept since 2005

Before starting her own business with The HR Dept in 2005, Tracey Hudson enjoyed being employed by smaller businesses.

“I loved the fact that I was making a difference. SMEs often make quick decisions and they are passionate about what they do. That’s the bit I love. I got frustrated with the red tape of working in corporate life. I wanted to get out of the rat race and do something on my own, but I knew quite quickly that I was going to be biting off more than I could chew if I set up a business on my own. When I heard about The HR Dept’s franchise opportunity, it was perfect for me so I jumped at it!”

Why The HR Dept appealed to Tracey

“When I made the decision to start my own business, I was troubled with how I was going to go about it. Where on earth do you start? Because The HR Dept was already an established franchise business and had made all the mistakes for me, it was really appealing! It gave me the opportunity to concentrate on the HR stuff and the customer service bit which I enjoy.

“I don’t have to spend time thinking about creating a website or reinventing the wheel with marketing materials. That was the element of running a business I didn’t have much experience in and just wouldn’t know where to start. I know that if I had attempted it alone, I would have failed and been back in corporate life by now which I really wouldn’t have enjoyed.”

“Building the business at my own pace”

“I love the fact that there’s no pressure. I can build the business as big or small as I wanted. I don’t have to answer to anyone and I’m not under pressure with targets – that’s not how The HR Dept operates. I have always worked hard, but life gets in the way sometimes! In my time with The HR Dept I have got married, had two children and built a small property portfolio all whilst running the business. This is all made a lot easier knowing that I have the support of the Central Office team as well as other licensees where needed. Now, in 2020, I employ a team of 11 who look after our clients brilliantly which allows me the freedom to work a couple of days a week.

What the future holds for Tracey’s business

“My team are brilliant – they focus on customer service which means happy clients. I coach from the sidelines to support them in growing the business and attracting new clients. To step back I needed to appoint an MD to lead the business which she does brilliantly, and as we take on more clients, the other team members have plenty of opportunities for promotion and different experiences which they enjoy.”
