I can build my business at my own pace - I can build it as large or as small as I want to."
Tracey Hudson - South Warwickshire & Rugby With The HR Dept for over 10 years

Before starting her own business with The HR Dept in 2005, Tracey Hudson enjoyed being employed by smaller businesses.

“I loved the fact that I was making a difference. SMEs often make quick decisions and they are passionate about what they do. That’s the bit I love. I got frustrated with the red tape of working in corporate life. I wanted to get out of the rat race and do something on my own, but I knew quite quickly that I was going to be biting off more than I could chew if I set up a business on my own. When I heard about The HR Dept’s franchise opportunity, it was perfect for me so I jumped at it!”

Why The HR Dept appealed to Tracey

“When I made the decision to start my own business, I was troubled with how I was going to go about it. Where on earth do you start? Because The HR Dept was already an established franchise business and had made all the mistakes for me, it was really appealing! It gave me the opportunity to concentrate on the HR stuff and the customer service bit which I enjoy.

“I don’t have to spend time thinking about creating a website or reinventing the wheel with marketing materials. That was the element of running a business I didn’t have much experience in and just wouldn’t know where to start. I know that if I had attempted it alone, I would have failed and been back in corporate life by now which I really wouldn’t have enjoyed.”

“Building the business at my own pace”

“I love the fact that there’s no pressure. I can build the business as big or small as I wanted. I don’t have to answer to anyone and I’m not under pressure with targets – that’s not how The HR Dept operates. It has meant that I could take a few weeks off when my husband and I got married and I could work from London when my husband had to relocate for a period of time.

“When my husband and I started a family, I wasn’t under any pressure to return to work after maternity leave because I was confident that the Central Office and my neighbouring licensees would look after my clients.”

What the future holds for Tracey’s business

“Our South Warwickshire business has been hugely successful so we decided that we wanted to expand. In 2017, we took on another territory in Rugby & Daventry and have exciting plans to make the most out of the huge potential client base. It almost feels like we are starting again – the difference this time is that I have an established team to help me on top of the Central Office support!

“I have no plans to retire anytime soon but want to build as big and as profitable business as possible.”
