My highlight of being in The Network is looking back at what we've created over the years. I've tried to create a business that I would like to be employed by and that's what's really special!"

What I liked about The HR Dept was the fact that they help you get started and give you support as you go along. "
Belinda Newton - Exeter With The HR Dept since 2010

What made you want to start your own business with The HR Dept?

“I had been thinking for some time about setting up on my own as an HR Advisor and had met with The HR Dept a couple of years before I actually became a licensee, however personal circumstance meant I couldn’t take the leap at that time. When I felt the time was right to set up my own company I came back to talk to The HR Dept because I liked the support that they gave. Going it alone can be very daunting and after nearly 20 years of HR experience I could do the HR part standing on my head, but I was very inexperienced when it came to running my own business. What I liked about The HR Dept was the fact that they help you get started and give you support as you go along. At the time I also liked the security of knowing that there was someone else there to cover your business if you were taken ill, or just wanted to have a holiday!”

When you started, what did you envision for your business?

“I never went into this intending to grow the biggest HR company possible – my aim was to earn enough money to live life the way I want to. It was a bit of a gamble but I went into it with my eyes open and with the attitude of ‘if I don’t try, I’ll never know if I could have done it’, so being scared or anxious never came into it. The HR Dept doesn’t force you into setting targets but encourages you to set your own. I will admit that my growth at the start was slower than I anticipated but I did start my business at the height of the recession. It took time to get myself established and to get known in my local business community, but I now like to think, with having a staff team of 5 and a client base of over 320 local business built up over 10 years, I have a reputation for being the local expert on all things HR.”

What’s been the best part about running your own business?

“The freedom to work when you want, how you want and with whom you want, and not having to deal with office politics!”

Which aspect of support do you value the most from The HR Dept?

“Knowing that there is someone at the end of the phone if needed and having a network of other HR professionals on call.”

Where is your business now? What are your future aspirations?

“My business is just about where I want it to be. As I have already said, I am not out to be the biggest company and so I don’t have any specific plans for growth. My main aim is to continue providing the local expert support that I have been doing.”
